How to Deep Clean Your Mattress

Ensuring a clean and hygienic sleeping environment is crucial for your health and well-being. Deep cleaning your mattress is a key part of this process and it’s recommended that you do so every six months. Here are the thing you’ll need and the steps you can take to deep clean your mattress effectively:

Things You Will Need:

  • Vacuum cleaner with an upholstery attachment
  • Baking soda
  • Mild dish soap or upholstery shampoo
  • Cold water
  • Spray bottle
  • Microfiber cloth or a sponge
  • Laundry detergent for any removable covers
  • A fan or a hairdryer
  • Protective gloves (optional)

Step 1: Strip the Bed

Remove all bedding, including sheets, pillowcases and mattress covers. Wash these items according to the care instructions provided by the manufacturer.

Step 2: Vacuum the Mattress

Using an upholstery attachment, vacuum the mattress surface thoroughly. Pay extra attention to seams and crevices, as these areas can harbour dust and pests.

Step 3: Spot Clean Stains

Mix a solution of mild dish soap or upholstery shampoo with cold water in a spray bottle. Spritz lightly on stained areas and gently dab with a microfiber cloth or sponge. Avoid soaking the mattress.

Tip: For protein stains like sweat or urine, you can use an enzyme cleaner.

Step 4: Deodorize with Baking Soda

Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda over the entire surface of the mattress. For an extra fresh scent, you can add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the baking soda before application. Let it sit for several hours or even overnight (for guest rooms) for maximum odour absorption.

Step 5: Vacuum Again

After the baking soda has had time to work its magic, vacuum it up, making sure to get all the powder off the mattress.

Step 6: Air Out The Mattress

If possible, let the mattress air out by placing it outside in a sunny, dry location for a few hours. UV rays can help kill bacteria and air drying can eliminate any leftover moisture.

Step 7: Flip and Repeat

If your mattress can be flipped, repeat the cleaning process on the other side to ensure a thorough clean.

Step 8: Protect Your Mattress

Once the mattress is completely dry, consider using a mattress protector before remaking your bed with clean bedding. This will help your mattress stay clean for longer.

Step 9: Maintain Cleanliness

To maintain a clean mattress, vacuum it monthly, change your bedding weekly, and spot clean stains immediately when they occur.

Deep cleaning your mattress is a straightforward process that can improve the quality of your sleep environment. Regular maintenance and immediate attention to stains can prolong the life and comfort of your mattress.
