To be mindful, you need to be aware of the present moment. You can try focusing on what you are seeing, hearing, smelling, touching, or feeling right now. You can also try paying attention to your breathing and how it feels as you inhale and exhale.

  3. The next step is to set a realistic goal for yourself- start with 5-10 minutes per day if that’s all the available time.

Focus on Feelings 

You can do a mindfulness exercise before you start writing in your journal. This will help you to focus on the present moment and let go of any thoughts that may be distracting you.

1) Sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed and imagine breathing as you exhale.

2) Take three deep breaths, open your eyes, and write down what you felt during this exercise.

The “Five-Item” Journal Exercise

Use the “Five-Item Journal Exercise.” It involves writing down five things that happened today, five things you are grateful for, what you accomplished today, what was something you learned, and your thoughts about the day.

Morning Pages

The Morning pages exercise was popularized by Julia Cameron, author of The Artist’s Way. It involves sitting down with a pen and paper or journal and writing without stopping for 30 minutes about anything that comes to mind, without thinking about grammar or editing yourself.

Present Tense

One way to be more mindful and purposeful when writing in your journal is to try writing in the present tense. This will help you stay focused on what is happening now instead of what happened yesterday or worrying about what might happen tomorrow.

Take a Moment Today to be Aware of Your Thoughts as You Start Writing in Your Journal
